Ricardo has been engaging with members of the community for ten years as a Public Defender. Understanding that people from all walks of life, with different familial, financial, and societal situations, enter a courtroom on a daily basis is essential to being a well-rounded judge. Ricardo is in a unique position from his experience to empathize with each individual who happens to approach the judicial bench.
Ricardo has a decade's worth of legal experience to draw from. What is most important about that experience is Ricardo has been in a criminal courtroom for almost every day of his legal career. Within his first month as a new attorney, Ricardo was already trying jury trials and defending constitutional rights. Since then, Ricardo has been in a courtroom negotiating plea deals, arguing motions, and navigating the intricacies of complicated felony cases. Ricardo's experience in the courtroom is essential to what a Superior Court judge needs to be.
Anger and vitriol has permeated our national discourse and unfortunately can erupt in a criminal courtroom. Having compassion and patience is a requirement to handling day-to-day matters as a judge, whether that's for victims, defendants, or even attorneys. Too many times, Ricardo has seen everyone who enters a certain courtroom walk on eggshells because of a judge's poor demeanor. Making sure everyone is listened to and respected is a necessary requirement to be a Superior Court judge.
