Judge Ricardo Jensen spent his formative years in a small farming community in southern Idaho. With a mother from Costa Rica, Judge Jensen developed a cultural heritage spanning two nations. Judge Jensen is fluent in both Spanish and Portuguese, and is the first judge in New Hanover County with Hispanic descent.
In 2013, Judge Jensen graduated from Ave Maria School of Law located in Naples, Florida, and passed the Florida Bar Exam the same year. Judge Jensen was then offered, and accepted, a position with the Public Defender's Office in southwestern Florida shortly after passing the bar, where he was quickly promoted to a felony track position based on his significant trial experience.
In 2016, following his wife's dream to earn a PhD, Judge Jensen and family moved to Virginia, where he passed the Virginia Bar Exam. Judge Jensen continued his service as a Public Defender and was eventually promoted to a Senior Trial Attorney position.
Finally, in 2021, Judge Jensen waived into the North Carolina Bar and accepted a position at the New Hanover County Public Defender's Office. Judge Jensen was then appointed to the Superior Court bench by Governor Roy Cooper on February 22, 2024. Judge Jensen draws from his wealth of experience across multiple states and countries to serve the members of New Hanover and Pender Counties and is the best fit to continue in that role.
